What detectors actually measure
AI writing detectors estimate how similar your prose is to patterns common in machine-generated text: uniform sentence length, generic transitions, and low specific detail. They do not know who typed the words. A high score is a reason for a conversation, not an automatic guilty finding.
Short answers, bullet lists, and reference sections are often excluded from scoring. If your course submission is mostly quotes or headings, the report may show limited scored prose — that is normal.
Responsible use of assistive tools
Follow your syllabus. If it allows grammar checkers or translation help, use them transparently. If it requires disclosure when AI brainstorms ideas, say so in a footnote or cover letter. When in doubt, ask before you submit.
Do not use paraphrasing tools to 'clean' AI drafts — that pattern is exactly what integrity teams look for and what our paraphrase-risk signals target. Write from your notes and sources instead.
Strengthen your draft before submission
Add specific examples only you can supply: a data point from lab, a quote you marked in the reading, a moment from discussion. Vary sentence length. Replace stock transitions ('Furthermore,' 'In conclusion') with logic that connects your actual claims.
Keep drafts and outlines. They are the best evidence if a score triggers review. Google Docs version history, annotated PDFs, and notebook photos all help show your process.
If your work is flagged
Stay calm. Request a meeting. Bring drafts and sources. Explain how you built the argument. Ask which passages concerned the instructor and revise those sections with more of your own analysis.
You may appeal if you believe the process was unfair. Appeals should cite concrete evidence — not just that the detector was wrong. Our reports document limitations for this reason.
Privacy and consent
You control whether an individual scan may be used in anonymized form to improve detection. The training checkbox at scan time is off by default. Deleting an analysis removes it from your account and invalidates share links.
